“thank you shade” is a conceptual journal that logs the last two summers abroad. utilizing a visual diary to re-evaluate my time with the people I came in contact with. this diary has given me a way to remember these precious moments that seemed to pass me so quickly.

the title comes from a metaphor I kept returning to: shade is the epitome of hospitality, offering comfort and safety in total selflessness. reflecting on the times when you’ve relied on the shade of a large sculpture or tree, it’s easy to imagine the faces of the friends or people you’ve met that have given you the same amount of comfort and feeling of belonging at their own personal expense.

when I titled this project
thank you shade”,  I was reffering to everyone who made me feel loved and at-home when I was merely a visitor. if this metaphor or project resonates with you, I encourage you to let those you met—no matter how brief—know that you appreciated their shade.
