KARIMOKU COMMONS TOKYO - MASARU SUZUKI EXHIBIT

was this my exhibit? -no

did I help plan the early stages of the event? -I was not invited yet

is it still worth sharing? -I think so...?

the masaru suzuki textile exhibit was held at karimoku commons tokyo during the time when I was a product design intern at the keiji ashizawa design studio in tokyo, japan

I kind of got dragged into the project one day when asked to help mock-up a architectural model of the floorplan and layout of the event. as it was one of my first projects during my 4 month internship, I was fairly eager to showcase the skills I thought I had within interior design. I had it all wrong

one thing you learn at well-known studios like this is what you contribute vs. what you think you can contribute. I was far too cocky to be reccomending the things I was, at the end of the day I forgot that this was masaru-san’s exhibition

thankfully, I was asked to still help with the final setup and configuration of all of the exhibition materials two days before the event. I needed to soak up information, I hated being the young naive kid who thought he knew everything. I took this time to listen and observe, I must’ve nodded and bowed about 200 times this day. I was very thankful to be there, to even be considered enough to share an opinion on how things should be laid out.

I shared many conversations with masaru-san, the architects and designers also helping set-up, even the construction crew who I shared a nice cold tea with outside during the july heat. I’m thankful to have learned my place and accepted and adapted to it.

it’s hard to swallow your ego, it’s even harder to swallow the idea that your ideas really aren’t shit...(yet).
