a contemporary reimagination of a spanish leather chair inspired by the longing I had for a childlike classroom chair.

The first step in this process... making it flatpack. If you are potentially uneducated in furniture or what “flatpack” is, don’t worry! We can unpack it together(lol).

The biggest example we can see of flatpack furniture come from the swedish giant IKEA. Their model of self-assembled furniture is something that is fairly new in the product landscape, but the use of clever nesting systems in packaging and easy to follow instructions has led to their success in the fast-furniture market.

Wow, that was a lot of talking, but I promise it won’t be much from this point on.

The main objectives and non-negotiables for this project were:
1. flatpack design
2. less waste from materials
3. minimal hardware
4. simplify design as much as possible

The next images will show you how all of these objectives worked together and created a final chair that utilized 1/3 of a standard sheet of plywood, used less than 2 yards of denim, and could be put together with a simple allen key.

doesn’t mean a whole lot without photos to show you though . . .
